Making films is all about telling a story. But it’s how we convey that story that can make or break our films.
One of the most powerful tools in our arsenal’s as storytellers is music.
Music makes us feel happy. It makes us feel sad, elated, overjoyed, defeated, sentimental and worthless all at the same time.
Music changes the way we and the audience see and respond to the stories we tell.
I won’t tell you how to write music because I can’t write music. So I want you to know your film inside and out. Understand every character arc, every piece of exposition and everything else in between and what you feel and how you want your audience to feel.
A composer will feed off of your understanding of the story to create the music for your film.
There are also lots of great sites to get tracks for your projects if you can’t write music or hire a composer and I’ve put links to some of the ones I have used for past productions.
The video above had music sourced from Soundstripe and the Images came from Visual Hunt. I purposefully did this to prove you can source music and ideas for your film from anywhere.
Understanding your story, your characters journey and how you want the audience to feel will help you find the music.
