Its no secret that the Canon 600D (while still a great camera) is now long in the tooth and ready to say goodbye as it heads to the camera body shop in the sky.
I’m not going to pretend that it’s not a sad time. My Canon 600D has been a fantastic camera for me and has produced work that I am extremely proud of. I’ve filmed an entire web series on it and produced numerous corporate videos for big companies and lost its 600D label somewhere on the London underground. The time has come though to bid it a very fond farewell.
But why? Simon Cade at DSLR Guide is still an avid fan of his Canon 600D and repeatedly states that he won’t be upgrading his anytime soon. Here, I’m going to explain why I am upgrading.
I’m getting more and more video work over photography and I need a camera that can handle both effortlessly as a B Camera. I will soon be upgrading my A Camera to either Canon C100 Mk II or a Sony FS700 (hanging on until a new release is announced) so I need a solid camera that has plenty of feature, good video quality and will take Canon EF lenses.
My 600D was my first foray into DSLR’s and it’s a great little camera. I made all my mistakes on this camera and have been better for it. Rather than jumping in at the deep and blowing all my cash on an expensive camera body, I got this guy and some decent glass (my Tamron 24-70 f2.8).
Now I know what you’re thinking – you could get a Metabones adapter and free yourself up for a Sony A7s or A7R II. I could and maybe I will someday, but right now, that isn’t an option.
So I’m looking at Canon’s range from the 5D Mark III, the new 5DS and 7D Mark II (not a crop sensor surely). What do all these cameras have to offer? The 5D Mark III has been around quite a while now but still takes great shot, the 5DS is its mid term replacement and offers pretty much the same but with a new sensor. The 7D Mark II is a 5D Mark III with a crop sensor as far as I can tell.
I know which way I am leaning at the moment – and the result may surprise you.
By my next blog, I may very well have upgraded. If so, you’ll know.
