Back in May 2016 I was contracted by the Bristol Calendar Girls to create a promotional video to showcase one of their casting days. The casting day itself took place in Pryzm, Bristol and was a brilliant day – even if my back disliked the sheer number of stairs in the place.
When I was invited back to shoot the Grand Final, I jumped at the chance to continue to tell the story.
I had of course by this time, moved camera systems. In May I was using my Canon 7D Mark II as my main camera. For the Grand Final though, I am now on my Canon C100.
The Grand Final took place over two locations, one was Ashton Stadium and the other was Przym (I seem to be going there more and more as I get older, surely not a good thing).
Equipment I took with me:
Canon C100
Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC
Rode NTG1
2 Batteries
Aputure LED Toplight
Manfrotto Monopod with 502 Head
And that’s it. In preparation I did bring my H4N with a 1/4 to 1/4 and a attenuator to plug into the mixing desk for the announcements at the end. However, the mixer couldn’t separate the output channels so it meant that I would have had Beyonce and Shakira blasting over any dialogue. So I didn’t record audio from that.
I also ditched the monopod when I realised amongst 800 people, I wouldn’t be able to set it up. A shame but then, Warp Stabilizer is my loyal friend in that respect. It was important to stay as mobile as I could because I never knew where the next shot would be.
The C100 was amazing to my eyes in low light. That’s not to say some shots didn’t need some noise reduction (because they did) but it performed very well upto 3200 ISO. I shot in Wide DR because I had a turnaround of a day and as much as I love C-Log, its a pain when you’re in a hurry and I was very impressed with the results and overall look and feel of the video.
I edited the video as always in Premiere Pro CC and graded inside of Premiere using Film Riot’s new LUT pack. Very good looking set of LUT’s indeed and it was a tough switch over from James Miller’s, but then he helped design the film riot ones, so my conscious is clear.
