In the 3rd out 4 instalments of “My Working Week” I record a lot of voiceovers and edit someone else’s footage.
I’m very used to editing my own work but less used to editing footage shot by someone else. This is mostly because I’m a solo shooter.
What is always nice to see is how other camera operators work and see how they organise their footage. Its also always good to see what picture profiles they shoot in and what their own style is and how different it is from my own way of shooting.
I shoot with a Canon C100 (as you can read about in my previous posts) and its perfect for me and produces a great image when paired with the Atomos Ninja 2. The footage I was dealing with was undoubtedly from a Sony camcorder (due to the mxf wrapper and folder organisation) and offers a lot to play with the 4:2:2 colour space. Still only 8-bit but that’s what I get from the Ninja 2.
I get why filmmakers shoot with a baked in look when filming, but for me that’s just not my style. It leaves fewer options later on when grading.
Also shot choices and framing are something which intrigue me as there are shots I would have taken and others which make no sense at all. But then I imagine that is exactly what another editor might make of my footage as I shoot and edit in my head and then piece the jigsaw puzzle together in the edit suite.
It’s all fun and games in filming and editing.
Until next week.
