Having a log profile on a Canon DSLR is something that indie filmmakers dreamed of for a very long time. And yet, Canon never released one.
They have a very good reason for that though. They want you to buy one of their EOS Cinema Series cameras if you want that kind of profile and camcorder features.
Now though we have two very good versions of Canon C Log for DSLR’S, one from James Miller and the other from EOS HD. Links below.
So what are the benefits of shooting in a log profile?
In a cinema camera, a log profile allows you to capture the full dynamic range of your camera. It gives you this horrible washed out image until you correct and grade it in the edit.
But on DSLR? The principle is the same, but you need to bear in mind what your camera can do. How much noise is in the shadows, how much detail can you recover in the highlights?
The answer is surprisingly more than you might think.
Take this shot here for example, it’s a little underexposed but with C Log I can recover a good amount of detail without too much of a noise penalty. This does gets better if you use an external recorder as it’s the codec that let’s it down here.
You can use it on all Canon DSLR’S. Phillip Bloom has made a very good test video using James Miller’s C Log profile on his channel, link is in the description.
Shooting in log does come with its own headaches, so make sure you’re taking the time to learn about colour correction and color grading. The significance of both and what a log profile will do for your films. It won’t solve all your problems, but it does give you an avenue of shooting to try that has previously been denied to Canon dslr video shooters. TCSTV have a great video about working with Log footage which was a great benefit to me when starting to shoot with log.
