I Did – The Trailer
So my short film ‘I Did’ a romantic comedy about a hapless groom who finds out he accidentally got married on his stag do, is ready for its festival run. In the run for this, I’ve created an EPK with cast photos, a promotional poster and a trailer.
It was my first time editing a trailer so I wasn’t sure how to go about editing one. We all see trailers everyday, they tell the basics of the story, an overview of all the characters and most importantly showcase the theme of the film.
I did a lot of research (and by research I mean I watched a whole lot of trailers) to get the feel of the romantic comedy genre.
For me it was all about giving everyone screen time in the trailer, setting up all the characters and the plot. This is surprisingly hard to do. I imagine with a feature or even a web series you have room to play each time, but with an 11 minute film there isn’t a lot you can show in the trailer without it basically seeming like you’ve watched the whole film on fast forwards.
There was also another big part of this I had to consider. Attention spans are shorter than ever! I had to hook a viewer in under 10 seconds and keep them watching. I made the decision that my trailer would be no longer than 40 seconds (and it came in at 38 seconds so I was impressed!)
You can check out the trailer below.
Festival dates to be announced.
Right now I’m working on my next project, and it’s a doozy!
